23 million to lose insurance under AHCA

Today's Managing Health Care Costs Number is 23 million

The Congressional Budget Office report on the American Health Care Act dropped last night at the end of the East Coast business day -and the news is great according to Paul Ryan.

“This CBO report again confirms that the American Health Care Act achieves our mission: lowering premiums and lowering the deficit,” Ryan said in a statement. “It is another positive step toward keeping our promise to repeal and replace Obamacare.”

Pretty much everyone else with a brain demurs.

Highlights of the CBO analysis:

  • 23 million will lose their health insurance by 2026
  • 14 million would lose Medicaid coverage (and that's before the additional cuts in the Trump 2018 budget proposal
  • 1/6 of Americans live in areas where the unstable individual market would make purchase of insurance prohibitively expensive for those with preexisting illnesses - mainly in states that waived essential benefits.
  • 1 in 5 Americans under 65 will be uninsured by 2026
  • Lower premiums are purely driven by loss of coverage by older and sicker people, and by skimpier "coverage."   (Plans without maternity, mental health, and inpatient care are not really coverage, are they?)
  • The overwhelming majority of health care cuts fund tax cuts for the rich, for drug companies, and for insurers.  (Total tax cuts are $661 billion- while deficit reduction is only $119 billion)
